Macedonia was the most important wine producing region of the Roman Empire, even in the times of Alexander the Great. Its known history dates back to almost 4000 years.

Terroir

  • soils : mountaineous region with alluvium and well drained soils
  • climate: combinaition of continental and Mediterranean climate
  • main red grapes varieties : vranec, kratosija, cabernet sauvignon, merlot, pinot noir. Main white grapes varieties : smederevska, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, zilovska

Main wine regions

  • Povardanie around the valley of the Vardar river (more than 80% of the production)
  • Pcinja-Osogovo to the East near the Bulgarian border
  • Pelagonija-Polog around lake Ohrid to the West near Albania
